(PBBCI)

Mission, Operating Values, & Goals

 Mission:

To function as an ongoing structure in order to provide 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys attending Stillwater Area Schools with an opportunity to participate in highly competitive basketball games and practices.  The 7th and 8th grade traveling program is to be in addition to the basketball experience available through the Stillwater Area Schools.  The 5th and 6th grade traveling program is to be instead of participation in the V.A.A. program.

PBBCI Operating Values:

On and Off Court Behavior of Players, Coaches & Parents

Good citizenship and respectful treatment of all stakeholders-players, coaches, parents and officials-will be stressed.

 Physical Development

Because many boys ages 12-16 are still physically immature, PBBCI’s program will encourage boys who have not attained physical maturity while resisting efforts to make “stars” out of boys who mature early.  Specifically, the fact that Stillwater area elementary and junior high age boys are often observed to be “behind” boys from areas where winning is emphasized early on is viewed positively: PBBCI’s mission is not to win traveling basketball championships but rather to encourage those boys who have the desire to compete interscholastically at the high school level.

 Both Inclusive and Exclusive

PBBCI’s program will be inclusive in terms of allowing all 7th and 8th grade boys who are participating with their Stillwater Area public school teams to try out for PBBCI sponsored teams.  All 5th and 6th grade boys attending Stillwater Area public schools can try out for PBBCI sponsored teams.

PBBCI’s program will be exclusive in terms of participation in traveling league games and tournaments being limited to those boys who are selected for the teams through a try-out process.  Should the Stillwater Area Public Schools decide to discontinue their V.A.A. grade school-age program and/or its junior high basketball programs that currently provide a broad based participation opportunity (especially through 7th grade) to all district students, PBBCI will reconsider its values re: exclusive vs. inclusive.

Relationship to Stillwater Area Varsity Program

PBBCI is a supplementary program to the public school basketball program.  As such, it is PBBCI’s desire to provide additional competitive playing opportunities.  It is not PBBCI’s mission to replace or substitute for a boy’s participation in the public school program.  PBBCI exists to provide additional competitive opportunities in response to the “traveling” programs being offered in other areas without falling into the trap of making traveling basketball an end unto itself.

 Fundraising

Parents of players participating in PBBCI’s program will be expected to take an active role in raising money to support both their sons’ involvement and the ongoing PBBCI program.
